2000: EXPANDING TO MEET HEALTHCARE NEEDS

Overall 2000 was a year of significant growth for the Free Clinic.  Our reports show that 23% more patients received healthcare in 2000 as compared to the Clinic’s first fifteen months in late 1998 and 1999.  They also show that medication assistance for patients quadrupled with the employment of a part-time Pharmacy Services Coordinator charged with matching medication resources with patient needs.   In response to the increased demand for service, a third monthly clinic was added through a partnership with the College of Health Sciences Physician Assistant Program.

While the Board and staff of the Free Clinic successfully navigated the challenges of growth in 2000, they also identified the need to develop a long-range plan for managing growth and development.  Recognizing the integral role the community plays in the ability of the Free Clinic to meet its mission,  input was gathered from a variety of community stakeholders. The result was the development and approval of a five-year plan encompassing seven major goals.  The goals include:  1) increasing awareness of clinic services among the low-income, uninsured population, 2) improving recognition of the Free Clinic in the community,  3) assessing and increasing staffing to ensure effective and efficient use of resources,  4) attaining financial stability,  5) providing comprehensive healthcare,  6) obtaining adequate and accessible physical space and 7) developing and fostering active community partnerships.

On behalf of the Board of Directors we thank you for your support of the Alleghany Highlands Free Clinic in 2000.  We also ask that as you review the activities of last year, you renew your commitment to making healthcare accessible in the Alleghany Highlands.
