History of Bethany U.M.C.

Bethany Church traces its heritage back to 1764 when 14 German-Dutch immigrants settled in the Naked Creek area and built a crude log structure for their religious meetings. In 1851, a new structure was built for the Methodist church, and in 1954, the Naked Creek Church relocated to its present setting and was renamed Bethany United Methodist Church.

While the United Methodist denomination claims a fine and rich history, first as a movement within the Church of England (Anglican Church) founded by John Wesley, we also strive for making disciples in the present as well as into the future. We seek to preach and practice our faith, being devoted to making effective and committed followers of Jesus Christ. In the words of John Wesley, our desire is for all people to experience a "heart strangely warmed" - a renewal and revival of heart, soul, and mind. We offer a gospel of hope and assurance found in Jesus Christ as Savior, always grounded in God's ever-present grace. And, as John Wesley also instructed, we encourage people to do "all the good they can in all the places they can."

Bethany United Methodist Church is committed to the Methodist belief that God provides mercy and love for all people; that God is made known through the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and that our faith is experienced through the gift of God's saving grace in Christ Jesus.

United Methodists understand their faith through a four-fold guideline called the Quadralateral:
  • Scripture
  • Tradition
  • Experience
  • Reason
with Scripture as our primary guide in the development of our faith.
