The exhaust pipe is low...comes out of the manifold, then under the footrest and out below the axle. One day I was "bushhoggin" the field where I'd just planted 2000 pine seedlings. I was happily mowing when I noticed my feet were getting hot. I looked down to notice that the cut grass had been blowing up around the back of the tractor and had caught fire thanks to the heat of the exhaust pipe. So I stopped and brushed the flaming grass off the tractor. Relieved that I didn't burn the tractor to death, looked back to see that the flaming grass had now ignited the grass that was on the top of the mowing deck. So I stamped and stomped and kicked the fire off the mower, and finally stood back to admire my quick thinking.

I got back on the tractor, turned the tractor around to mow the next pass, and looked up to see that the entire field was now on fire!!!! Turned out that even though I'd saved the tractor, I'd neglected to check on the grass under or near the tractor. It had spread like hell, igniting the field and grown with the wind So I started hollerin to my darling ball and chain* to call the fire department, or at least bring me a beer, and sort of watched there helplessly while the whole damn 12 acre field, plus the neighbor's 40 acre pasture, along with my 2000 baby pine tree roasted furiously in 150' high flames and a whole lot of black smoke... Yep that was a fun day...

* My Darlin' Ball and Chain, aka Janie, is a great woman, the best wife and wonderful partner. She knows I've made this reference and is aware that it is not made with malice...just poetic license...no "flames" ok?
