George Slabbert's South African TE20

Good Day,

It is rumored that more than 80% of all the Fergusons ever sold in the Republic of S.A. are still in working condition. I'm trying to establish the original number. These little workhorses are now reduced to service mainly on small holdings (pieces of land between 5 and 21 Ha (smaller is a plot and bigger is a farm). I own a small holding (8.5), and part of the "fixtures" when I bought it was, (according to your information) a TE20 and a number of implements. It is a Ferguson manufactured by British Standard. She starts on Petrol (gasoline?) and when sufficiently hot, is switched over by means of a valve to kerosene. It takes a set of "Mini" (little British Car) points and condenser as well as NGK BP6ES plugs.

As far as I can establish, the only change from the original configuration is the charging/starting system. She has an alternator instead of the generator and related parts and starts with an ignition key. Being the start of winter (June) in our part of the world, I started paying attention to the old girl (not the long haired domestic animal that makes footprints similar to a human being). I gave it a major service – rings, head/tappet cover gaskets, flush, points, plugs, coil, plug leads, etc. She runs and works perfectly. I'm now busy scraping the soil/oil/grease deposits away and sandblasting the bits and pieces as well as replacing the grease nipples and related rubber boots. The finale will be a spray job – battleship gray with a red stripe around the engine cover. I'll put my Kodak DC50 to good use and send you some pictures.

Incidentally, I am also a VW fan, owning and operating a Jetta(1.6), Pick-up(1.8) and Microbus(2.1i). --George L. Slabbert
