| At the heart of Schola Cantorum, lies its members'
desire to master and present great Music
of the Masters to the
community. The ensemble is comprised of approximately 50
volunteer musicians who represent the most talented singers from the
local Shenandoah Valley area (primarily Augusta County, Staunton and
Waynesboro). The size of the organization is limited, in part, by
many of the venues in which we perform, primarily church sanctuaries. Members pay dues (currently $25) for each semester and purchase and maintain their concert costumes. Rehearsals are held each Tuesday from 7:00 - 9:00 PM from the beginning of the semester to the concert. Because of the difficulty of the music we present, attendance at rehearsals is critical and is monitored by "section leaders." The Fall semester begins immediately after Labor Day in September and the Fall Concert is usually held in late November. Rehearsals for the Spring semester begin in early January and the concert is usually in late March or early April. In filling vacancies in the ensemble, the Choral Director is concerned not only about the ability of the candidate but also about the overall balance of parts within the organization. Therefore, if a member of a large section leaves, he/she may not be replaced directly. Instead the numeric opening may be used to fill out another section. Auditions for joining Schola Cantorum are held just prior to or at the beginning of the semester if any vacancies have occurred. If you are interested in auditioning, please send e-mail to: schola@ntelos.net giving your name, address and telephone number; the part you sing; and a brief summary of your singing experience. |
