Rehearsal Notes

Tuesdays Notes Homework
Jan 8, 2008

You got off to a very good start this week and so now we get busy.

At rehearsal, in sectionals, we will review #V - pgs. 21-29 and work  on #III - pgs. 38 - 46.

I'd like to divide into 3 sectionals (soprano and alto - Jean, Mary  Alice, and Jennifer, accompanists); (tenor - Jan, accompanist); (bass  - Kathy Melton, accompanist)

Assignment:
1.  NUMBER ALL MEASURES IN THE SCORE.  Begin each section anew.  Watch  out for the partial measures that begin a couple of the sections -  measure 1 should be the first FULL measure!

2.  Make use of cyberbass.com or the CD's from Charles to help learn  your part.

3.  #II - work on pgs. 21 - 29 (end)

4 Review #V and work on #III pgs 38-46.

4.  Feel free to earn extra points by going over other sections as  well as those assigned.  The fugues in #III and #VI are very hard!

In sectionals:
1. Review pgs. 38-46

In rehearsal, I hope to sing through Movement IV. Then we will have experienced all the movements!

Your assignment is pgs. 75 - 85. This is the most difficult part of the Requiem and will take each of you doing lots of work on your own part!
Review page 40. Be able to "count/sing" this page. Review pgs. 41- 46.

Feb 5, 2008

There were some lovely sounds when we "oo'd" through # IV! We have now sung through all the movements and we all KNOW where our work must be done! The fugues with their key changes and lush harmonies often don't go where we think they are and so those places with small differences should be marked in your scores! Keep listening to the entire CD's as well as your part rehearsal CD. The more you internalize the sounds of Brahms, you will find you will "hear" your parts better.

Text changes for # VII:

"Blest are the dead who die in the Lord, from henceforth, says the spirit, they will rest from their labors, and their good works will follow after them.
Blest are the dead who die in the Lord. They who die in the Lord from henceforth.

Assignment:
1. #VI - pg. 79 - end
2. #III - Review pg. 37 - 46
3. Remember that you must work on the difficult passages yourself and cannot wait to rehearsal to "hear" the notes from your neighbors. There are too many similar but different places. Continue to listen to your recordings - it does help!

Feb 19, 2008

The first thing I must address is that each section needs to be conscious of blending within the section.  I don't want to hear individual voices, but a beautiful blend from each section!  This work is taxing on the voices and you can't oversing and survive to the end!

Next, several people are still struggling with notes.  I can't stress enough that outside study on the tricky "similar, but very different" measures throughout the fugues is a must!  The sooner you conquer those, you will be able to enjoy singing this powerful piece.  We HAVE to avoid the last minute panic that we experienced before the last concert.  If you need more outside help, please let me know.  Kathy Melton has volunteered to help individuals or groups, if needed.

Sectionals:  Review #II - pgs. 21 - end

Rehearsal:
1.    #I -
2.     #II -
3.    #III -
4.    #IV -

SOPRANOS:  Learn pgs. 75 - 85!!!!!  (I have a star by measures 229, 242 especially)
ALL:        #VII - figure out where you can get your entrance notes (look and listen to the parts or accompaniment notes that precede your entrances)
ALL:        Review #III
